Audi A3: the right format

But in other classes, the brand has its own trump cards, while the A3 has a clear goal, which has not changed since 1996 – unconditional leadership in the “premium” segment “C” class.

With an increased base (+65 mm), an increased width (+30 mm) and a reduced height (-10 mm), the new Audi A3 is very close in its proportions to the classic coupe. Shortened overhangs, rear pillars with a large slope and flatter glasses contribute to optical illusion. The view of the front part of the car is marked by the underlined dynamic outlines of the headlights with transparent glasses, where the upper contour of the latter is beveled towards the center and gives the face with the typical double Audi radiator grille a somewhat aggressive look. The car’s interior is sporty and elegant – this impression is enhanced by a lower seating position, a floor gas pedal, round ventilation grilles finished “under aluminum”, a high center console with an ergonomically convenient gear shift position. There are three basic configuration options: Attraction, Ambition, Ambiente. The basic equipment of the new Audi A3 offers, among other things, a function of a comfortable fit (Easy-Entry) on the front seats, front electric windows and central locking with remote control. The position of the driver’s seat in this configuration can be adjusted in height, while the rear seats can be electrically heated upon request.

The gamma of engines was replenished with two new engines – a two-liter gasoline engine with direct injection FSI (150 hp) added to the 1.6-liter petrol engine (102 hp) and the 1.9-liter turbodiesel (105 hp) the same volume (140 hp) and a 3.2-liter V-shaped “six” (241 hp) Depending on the type of engine, mechanical five- or six-speed gearboxes can be installed on request, as well as an automatic transmission with sequential gear shift «tiptronic». Cars with the most powerful gasoline or supercharged diesel engines can also be equipped with the new DSG sequential gearbox. This modern transmission – a product of racing technology – due to the presence of dual clutch allows instant gear changes without interrupting the flow of power. As before, as part of the compact “C” class, the Audi A3 offers buyers of the most powerful petrol and diesel versions of the model a permanent four-wheel drive, providing dynamic performance in all weather conditions and an additional means of active safety.

The dynamics of the new A3 are also ensured by the optimal combination of suspensions – the upgraded front-type MacPherson and the new four-lever independent rear. This combination involves a sporty driving style, ensuring the stability of the movement in the corners, both at the front and at the full drive. The direct connection of the anti-roll bars with shock absorber racks minimizes body vibrations relative to the longitudinal axis, which provides additional comfort that is felt when driving and is designed, in fact, for higher-end cars.

On the new A3, an electromechanical steering system with a Servotronic system is provided, which ensures an optimal combination of the “steering feel” with extremely low sensitivity to unevenness of the carriageway and with a noticeably reduced power consumption.

Also in the standard version of the complete set of the Audi A3, there are such safety devices as Brake Assist, ABS, Electronic Dynamic Stability Control (ESP), “active” front head restraints and front and four side airbags.
