Citroen C-Airdream: Cloud №9

In the world of designers, the French speak their own special language. Their voice is sometimes almost not heard behind the Italian squabble or the American complacent choir, but it is worth listening to it – after all, the images created by the French, more often than any other, are translated into reality.

In the world of designers, the French speak their own special language. Their voice is sometimes almost not heard behind the Italian squabble or the American complacent choir, but it is worth listening to it – after all, the images created by the French, more often than any other, are translated into reality. How many powerful supercars with the Apennines each year are amazing, staying on paper? How many North American angular concepts still plow the international motor show? But Renault Avantime, Vel Satis, Peugeot 206 CC and Сitroen C5 can be seen on every second European parking lot. And, if you’re lucky, this “citrus aerial dream” will soon appear there.

Externally, it looks like all the “Citroen” at once – a long wheelbase, a windshield piled in, a long front overhang and a chopped off rear. To these classic ingredients, you can add clear body contours with soft, smooth contours. The game of forms of this concept is like the key to the design secret of distant DS and SM. For example, follow the movement of the front wing line, which, developing, moves from acute to soft and dissolves in the area of the rear bumper. In the same way, those who tried to describe the style of the famous goddess, deesse, DS19, with their usual words, were lost. Having seen the front end pressed to the ground, no one can predict what the back of the concept looks like – its unusual, utilitarian simplicity does not fit in with the fluids that the image of this car exudes. The tinted black double chevron stump resembles the backdrop of the rebel ship from the old Star Wars series. Charm dissipates? As if not so. It will return, it is worth the eye to begin to note the accuracy with which all the lines of this high-speed French coupe are verified. The front air intakes, narrow integrated headlights that emphasize stylish frontline lines, a windshield without a broken transition turning into a roof, powerful “shoulders” of the rear wings, make it very clear: this car will stand on the road no matter what … In the world of real C-Airdream cars return interesting numbers – the concept drag coefficient is only 0.28.

Unlike the exterior, the inner world of the car negates the extra shine of chrome and polished aluminum. This can be perceived as a creative declaration by designers of the brand who want to move away from modern trends, leaning in favor of technogenic design using cold materials. The interior of C-Airdream plays a game with its contemplator, demanding to solve multiple riddles scattered around a magnificent, mystical salon. For example, where does the light come from that comes through the dashboard, door linings, seats, center console? The answer is: a fancy multi-colored interior light that fills the usual lacunae of the cabin, according to the designers of Citroen, is just another form of communication between the car and the driver. Just another form of car mind. Panoramic roof evenly distributes another light – natural, perfectly complementing the dark colors chosen for the interior. Here, the chocolate skin of the seats contrasts with the cream wheel of a fancy shape and light front panel, while the entire architectural ensemble gives away… fiction by Lem or Bradbury. But this – if you move away and reflex a minute. Better not – we have not fully revealed all the secrets.

There are no familiar pedals, gear knob and handbrake. There is a steering wheel with a fixed central hub, but no steering shaft. It’s all about the engineers who, following the designers, want to outrun time – the usual mechanical connections here are replaced by electronic ones, and the entire control is brought to the futuristic steering wheel. It is necessary to accelerate – Ferrari-style shift paddles push yourself, slow down – in the opposite direction, you need to change the gear – use the buttons on the front side of the steering wheel. Everything is in the best traditions of modern ergonomics and does not require long habituation. Steering functions also lie on the electronics, which can adjust the ratio of the angle of rotation of the steering wheel and the wheels in a convenient direction for the driver. For example, when parking, it can make the steering light and “short”, and at high speed – “heavy” and ultra-sharp. “At high speed” is not a joke, because the coupe is fully operational and equipped with a three-liter V-shaped “six”, ready at any moment to shoot its 210 hp Power is realized through an adaptive automatic transmission with sequential control. In addition, the futuristic car is equipped with the third generation of Hydractive hydropneumatic suspension, offering two pre-programmed levels of rigidity – comfortable and sporty. But do those who move on cloud number 9 remember about sports?
