Hyundai Elantra: we are no worse than others

In thirteen years of production, the mid-size model of the Elantra has been upgraded twice. Over the years, it has become a bestseller in the model range of the South Korean company and sold around the world in the amount of 3 million copies.

This fall, Hyundai Elantra entered the European and Russian markets in a new, third, face.

First of all, the designers slightly “corrected” the exterior of the car: the new black grille visually belittles the car, expressive headlights and muscular vyshtampovki on the hood hint at the dynamic nature. Behind the changes touched the optics and the trunk lid, it was not a decorative spoiler. As Hyundai engineers say, with a drag coefficient of 0.313 Cd, the Elantra is quieter and more economical.

New dashboard sports separate speedometer and tachometer with a beautiful blue backlight. The Siemens multifunctional on-board computer informs the driver about average and instant fuel consumption, the distance covered and the distance to the final destination. The GLS version is equipped with leather interior, electric sunroof, advanced audio system with six speakers, air conditioning, side airbags and other trifles, without which life is no longer a joy …

The choice of engines in the Elantra is not so wide: two petrol, 1.6 (104 hp) and 2.0 (143 hp) and 2-liter 111-strong turbodiesel. The most powerful gasoline engine 2.0 DOHC Beta has got an intelligent valve timing control system, which increases torque to 143 Nm at 6000 rpm, simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and stabilizing idling.

Diesel CRDi with Bosch common rail injection system and Mitsubishi turbocharger reaches peak power at 4000 rpm. And although diesel can also accelerate the car to passport 190 km per hour, its main advantage is efficiency: average fuel consumption is 6.1 liters per hundred (8 liters in the city and 5 liters on the highway).

The transmission can be in two versions: a manual 5-speed or 4-speed “automatic”, in which the transmission and engine control unit is integrated into a single microprocessor module. In addition, the adaptive box itself adapts to a particular driving style. The third generation of the Elantra is supplied as standard with gas-filled shock absorbers, which were previously installed only as an option. The entire suspension is independent: the front is proven McPherson struts, the rear is a multi-link Dual Link. The brakes on the front wheels – ventilated disc, with hydraulic booster. ABS is also “responsible” for safety with Traction Control and frontal air bags with a double-action sensor system. By the way, the new Elantra received a high 4-star rating for crash tests according to the NCAP method in terms of the body’s resistance to collisions. Restyled versions for the Russian market, very promising for Hyundai, in the base also plan to equip air conditioning and power accessories with electric mirrors and heated front seats, automatic switching on front headlights in the dark, electrolifts, an additional brake light and a central lock. The solidity of a cheap car (the previous Elantra with a 1.6 engine was sold for $ 13,000) is now attached to the chrome Hyundai emblem on the steering wheel, door handles to match the exterior color and plastic inserts “under the tree” in the cabin. Of the other, less pretentious, but more important new products worth noting is an automatically dimming rear-view mirror, a net and a full-size spare tire in the trunk, a door unlock sensor, fashionable round fog lights.
