Why Hyundai can not do KIA

It happens that restyling is carried out only for show. Yes, the car has received new features, but soon they will become familiar and in the traffic flow you can’t really figure out – which modification is more recent, and which is dorestayling. The updated Elantra is unlikely to risk getting lost among previous versions. So what, and the exterior of this sedan really changed dramatically: the headlights became triangular and now literally wedged into the radiator grille, the trapezoid grille itself has more acute angles, a triangular block with “fog lights” and “turn signals” appeared on the sides, and the front bumper came out downright screaming. Bold, aggressive, unusual! And it looks really cool: it is unlikely that anyone now dares to tease the Korean sedan with a “remnant”.

Major design changes have touched the front. In the top-end Elegance configuration, headlights and running lights are LED, in simpler versions Hyundai Elantra buyers will be content with halogen optics. In the back of the car should be noted new lights and another bumper. A total of 11 body enamels will be offered.

In the back of the Hyundai Elantra, a new optics appeared, the license plate moved to the bumper from the trunk lid, where now the “Elantra” inscription stretched from the flashlight to the flashlight. Stylish! But not without flaws. For example, the trunk release button, hidden in the logo on the lid, appears only in the expensive version of the Elegance, and then with the optional Style package. And in other cases, you have to use either the lever in the cabin, or the button on the key fob. Oh, somehow it turns out quite undignified for a modern golf class car! By the way, on the move, the boot lid is also quite strongly soiled, and with it the rear view camera, which is placed here starting from the second-oldest version of Base.

And what’s inside? Alas, unlike the exterior, the changes in the cabin of the Hyundai Elantra do not pull the revolution. Although they certainly are. For example, there appeared a new steering wheel, a different dashboard, other audio and air conditioning control units, other deflectors, a new multimedia system with a 7-inch screen with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and wireless charging for a smartphone (in the top-of-the-line Elegance). In general, the Hyundai Elantra cabin architecture remains the same.

There are no complaints about landing: the “Korean” traditionally pleases with a rather comfortable chair and a wide range of steering wheel adjustments. But the graphics of the dashboard and the onboard computer window could be read a little better. But to understand the “multimedia” is not difficult: everything is intuitively clear and is located exactly in those menu items where you expect. It is a pity that in the same way as on the platform KIA Cerato, you cannot get a full-fledged navigation system even for an extra charge. Instead, the owner is invited to connect your smartphone and use Google maps. For those who love autotravel, this is not the best solution, because we do not always have mobile communication, and abroad do not want to spend money on expensive roaming.

In technical terms, there is no change, except for other rear silent blocks and slightly different aerodynamics due to the new body. As before, the Korean sedan is offered with two MPI petrol four-cylinder engines: a 1.6-liter unit with a capacity of 128 hp. (155 Nm) and a 2.0-liter engine developing 150 hp (192 Nm). There are also two transmissions: a 6-speed “mechanics” and a 6-speed “automatic”. In general, in this regard, the Hyundai Elantra repeats the KIA Cerato, which I tested in the fall on the roads of Croatia. It requires a little explanation: the KIA sedan changed generation last fall, and the “four-door” Hyundai now experienced only restyling, but this does not mean that the Cerato is now a newer platform. Rather, he just caught up with the Elantra, and before that was based on the previous generation of the Hyundai model.

The body structure of the Hyundai Elantra has not changed: it consists of high-strength steels by 53%, hot-stamped steel by 14.7%, and other metals by 32.3%. Also in the sedan used about 120 meters of adhesive joints.
Both Korean brands essentially leave Russian buyers without their best technical innovations – turbo engines and a 7-step “robot” with two clutches. In general, you can be sure in advance that the Elantra is going the old way. By the way, how is she going?

On the first day of the test, we got a car with a 1.6-liter 128-horsepower engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission – a popular version. I must say, the sedan in the city copes with its task perfectly: it accelerates with confidence, smoothly and imperceptibly changes gears and also has a good economy – about 7–8 l / 100 km. Outside the city is not so clear. No, no, the Elantra with a 1.6-liter engine is going very well – the power and torque is enough for overtaking.
